Biogaphy of JGGL

JGGL was founded by its founder Mr. Masashi Furuya in Kofu city in Japan where the gemstone is an industry with a local tradition, with Prof. Dr. Hermann Bank of D.Gem.G. and Prof. Akira Chikayama as technical advisors in 1995. Additionaly, in 1996 Prof. Dr. Gübelin made an offer to become an advisor emeritus of JGGL and started to share the up-to-date research information on his visit. At incunabula, JGGL was basked for advisors of world leading researchers.

Journal “Gem information” and enlightenment for gemstones.

From its establishment, JGGL focus on the researches and enlightenment of interest of gemstones. The Japanese journal of “Gem information” and special edition for specific gemstone such as Paraiba tourmaline “World of gemstones” have been highly appreciated in Japan. At the same time, Mr. Furuya had many lectures to gemstone dealers and end users. And he had seminar at Institute of Gemology and Jewelry Art Yamanashi prefectural government for gemstones. Also, he appeared on TV in Japan to explain theoretically the formation of gemstone. These activities have been continued by his son, Mr. Masaki Furuya after his passing away in 2007.

Furuya collections:

More than 12,000 pcs gemstone collection of JGGL founder, Mr. Masashi Furuya. Mr. Furuya spent more than 40 years to collect them from all over the world. The specimens are collected directly from the gem mines by him with strong relationship of worldwide gem dealers. It is no need to say that the wide variety of locality of sample stone helps gem identification and origin determination. And also the old stones without recent treatment are quite helpful for identification of new treatment. With newly developed equipment such as EDXEF (elemental analyzer) and many kinds of spectrometers including microscopic raman spectrascopy. These collections work as “brain” of JGGL now.

Founder:Mr. Masashi Furuya D.Gem.G., F.G.A., C.G.J.

.Japanese delegate of I.G.C, Assistant professor of Institute of Gemmology and Jewelry Art Yamanashi prefectural government. Spent more than 30 years in gemstone industry in Idar-Oberstein and Kofu city and introduced agate cameo to Japanese market first. Exhibited at Tucson gem show and Basel fair for 10 years. Co-directed sapphire mining in Ilakaka, Madagascar from 1999 to 2002. Founded gem laboratory with his enthusiasm for gemstones in the trend of decreasing of natural beautiful gemstone and increase of new treatment for gemstones. Passed away in October 2007.

After studied gemmology in Japan, U.S. and Germany, got a diploma of European Gemmologist of EU as the first Japanese. Co-worked with Mr. Masashi Furuya for sapphire mining in Madagascar, entered MBA program at Keio University, Japan. Worked as a marketing consultant in Mitsubishi UFJ research and consulting Co,. Ltd. Succeeded JGGL after Mr. Masashi Furuya from 2007.
